Two Studies on Christmas Carols

Two Studies on Christmas Carols

Two Studies on Christmas Carols
Composed by R. B. Jawad

Both pieces are for two voices. The first piece, for two sopranos, simply uses “The Huron Carol” for one of the voices. A counterpoint is sung against this first voice. The piece was written for children, so the range in both voices is the same: c4 to d5. Voice crossing is used to achieve a polyphonic texture without altering the melody.

The second piece, for alto and bass, uses part of the melody for “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen” as a subject to create a canonic structure. Two additional themes that contrast with this subject appear later in the work. The piece can be sung a cappella, though the range is large for each part: f2 to d4 for the lower voice, and a3 to d5 for the upper voice. An organ part is included as an optional accompaniment.
