Missing Digits: Nineteen Piano Pieces for One and Two Fingers
Composed by R. B. Jawad

Piano music has occasionally been written for one hand only. 'Missing Digits' takes this a step further, exploring the idea of playing with only some of the fingers on the hand. The first pieces in the set are written to be played with just one finger. The following pieces are studies on various two-finger combinations. For example, three of the pieces are written for any two fingers which have one finger in between. Even if the pieces are restricted by these rules, they are free otherwise, employing a variety of musical techniques throughout. Each piece has its own form and its own tonal structure. Different time signatures are utilized, including some with irregular or lopsided beats. The character, too, varies between and within pieces. However, the music is not programmatic: each piece was written abstractly and named afterwards. Several of the early pieces can be played by beginners; the others are probably considered intermediate-level. If the pianist chooses to use one of the harder finger combinations (for example the 3rd and 5th fingers), a few of the faster pieces can be quite challenging.
